Footnotes

  1. ^

The Behemoth—long associated with hippopotamus—has been speculated to be from unattested Egyptian *pꜣ-jḥ-mw»1: "the ox of water". Either directly to Biblical Hebrew, or to West Semitic as the origin of the root *b-h-m: "beast, animal, unspeaking". But it's only speculation. The Hebrew word now also means "hippopotamus", but that is a later semantic addition based on the same long association.
